On February 28, 2018 Ishik University hosted a two-hour workshop on Quality Assurance (QA) and Accreditation that aimed at presenting international perspectives related to Quality Assurance and Accreditation in Higher Education. This helps contribute to furthering the Quality Assurance process in Higher Education in the Kurdistan Region and Iraq.
The workshop was organized by the Quality Assurance unit in coordination with the Computer Engineering department at Ishik University. The seminars presented in the workshop covered international frameworks of Quality Assurance as experienced in UK and Australia as well as accreditation practices. Participants included directors of Quality Assurance from other universities, deans and heads of departments at Ishik and academic staff interested in the subject.
The first seminar was made by Dr Riadh Al-Mahaidy, a Professor of Structural Engineering and Director of the Smart Structures Laboratory at Swinburne University of Technology, Australia. He also holds the position of Vice President for International Engagement at Swinburne. Prof. Al-Mahaidy shared an insightful account of QA within the Australian framework. He also made significant recommendations as to promoting the process of QA and planning for international accreditation.
The second seminar was presented by Dr Sabah A. Jassim, a Professor of Mathematics and Computation at University of Buckingham, UK. Prof. Jassim focused on the UK framework and practice of QA. Reference to state and private universities and their status in UK and Iraq were also made. Also present and involved in the discussion was Prof. Dr Mohamed Al-Rubaei, Advisor to Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research in the Federal Government of Iraq and chairman of the Network of Iraqi Scientists Abroad (NISA)
