Ishik University and Erbil Polytechnic University hosted 3rd International Engineering Conference on Development in Civil & Computer Engineering Applications on February 26 and 27, 2017. The aim of the conference was to disseminate research findings and provide a platform for scholars to debate and exchange ideas on the developments in the field of engineering. The conference proceedings will be indexed by Google Scholar Databases and each paper will have DOI number. Furthermore, the conference provides our graduate students a chance to establish communication with experienced researchers in order to discuss their current work as well as to be engaged in future research topics, and new opportunities.
The rate of acceptance was 56% while 22 papers accepted and presented. 68 authors registered from Kurdistan, Iraq, Russia, Malaysia, Bosnia, Turkey and India. Erbil Polytechnic and Ishik University are grateful to all prospective presenters for their valuable contributions that will bring new perspectives on the developments in the Civil and Computer Engineering to Kurdistan Region. The contributions of the conference to Kurdistan will be as follows:
- To encourage people to use the latest technology in constructions
- To develop projects for better technology use
- To inform people about global changes in construction and technology
The first day of the conference was held at Erbil Polytechnic University and second day at Ishik University. The conference started with welcome speeches by Prof. Dr. Ahmet Oztas President of Ishik University and Assist. Prof. Dr. Kawa Sherwani President of Erbil Polytechnic University.
We were delighted to organize the panels to hear what the technology gurus and researchers will share about the technology advancements and their impact on our society and daily lives. During the conference, three panels were held in order to advance and contribute to specific research areas in the majors of Civil Engineering and Computer Engineering.
The first panel was about the Engineering Education titled “Contemporary Approaches to Engineering Education in Developing Countries” and organized in collaboration with IFEES (International Federation of Engineering Education Societies) and GEDC (The Global Engineering Deans Council), chaired by Dr. Hans J. Hoyer (Secretary General of IFEES, Executive Secretary of GEDC).
Other panelists were Prof. Dr. Ahmet Öztaş (President of Ishik University), Prof. Dr. David Scott (Department of Civil Engineering, Curtin University, Australia), and Prof. Dr. Ibrahim I. Hamarash (Vice President of Salahaddin University-Erbil).
The second panel was about “Sustainable Construction” chaired by Dr. Botan Majeed Asinger (Dean of Erbil Technology Institute, Erbil Polytechnic University) and consists of the members of Prof. Dr. Bayan Salim Al-Nu’man (Civil Engineering Department, Ishik University), Asst. Prof. Dr. Mahmoud Khayat (Head of Architectural Engineering Department, Salahaddin University), and Asst. Prof. Dr. Hassan Hassoon (Mechanical and Environmental Engineering, Ishik University).
The last panel was about “Big Data for a Smarter Society” chaired by Asst. Prof. Dr. Iyd Eqqab Maree (Erbil Technical Engineering College, Erbil Polytechnic University), Asst. Prof. Dr. Tara Yahiya (Computer Science and Engineering Department, University of Kurdistan Hewler), and Dr. Halit Vural (Dean of Engineering Faculty, Ishik University).
We were also delighted to organize two plenary sessions covering the different areas of the conference: Dr. Dirk Jankowski (CEO, AJG Ingenieure) talked on “Fire Safety in Civil Engineering” and Asst. Prof. Dr. Tara Yahiya (University of Kurdistan-Hewler) on “Fog Networking: A key Enabling for 5G and IoT”. Lastly, we had a seminar presented by ACI (American Concrete Institute) – Iraq Chapter.
We are grateful to our partners and sponsors: LG Company, the Global Engineering Deans Council (GEDC), Federation of Engineering Education Societies (IFEES), Korek Telecom, Institute (ACI) Iraq Chapter, Lafarge, and Karwanchi Group.
